WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement as President Bush considers vetoing the FY 2008 Defense Authorization Bill over recent objections to section 1083, a provision that strengthens the ability of victims of the brutality of Saddam Hussein to seek compensation.
"I urge the President not to turn his back on our troops or halt programs designed to enhance our national security capabilities by vetoing the Defense Authorization bill.
"The legislation passed both houses of Congress by an overwhelming majority. Congressional leaders have indicated they are willing to work with the Administration on technical corrections or concerns with the legislation. A veto of this legislation at this point would prevent thousands of brave men and women currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan from receiving pay incentives long promised to them, and would prevent many veterans who have lost limbs and are suffering from other combat-related injuries from receiving upgraded medical services.
"I urge the President to work with Congress and sign legislation that moves our country in a New Direction and properly tends to the needs of our soldiers both on and off the battlefield."
