WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the Congress wrapped up business for the year, House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement recapping some of the major legislative accomplishments Congressional Democrats have made in the first session of the 110th Congress.
“Since regaining our majorities in both the House and Senate, Congressional Democrats have moved our country in a New Direction with the passage of legislation that more adequately secures our homeland, increases the minimum wage, makes college more affordable, reduces our dependence on foreign oil, helps rebuild the Gulf Coast and improves the standards of living of our nation’s veterans.
“In spite of all we have accomplished this year, President Bush and right-wing conservatives have continued to serve as roadblocks by preventing Democrats from passing a comprehensive children’s health initiative and fiscally responsible middle-class tax cut package. Furthermore, through the President’s many veto threats and his refusal to negotiate in good faith, Democrats were blocked in our efforts to pass a broader and fiscally responsible omnibus bill that better meets the needs of all Americans.
“With a new legislative session fast approaching in 2008, undoubtedly there will be many tough and challenging issues that this Congress must confront. However, Democrats stand united in continuing to advance an agenda that moves our country in a New Direction.”
