WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement regarding passage of H.R. 6, the Energy Independence and Security Act.
“Today, the House passed a landmark, innovative, and environmentally-conscious bill that will boost America’s production of ethanol-based fuels and substantially increase the fuel economy standards of all cars and trucks that frequent our roads and highways.
“The innovative mandates in the Energy Independence and Security Act will increase the CAFE standards for all vehicles to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. Furthermore, the fuel efficiency authorizations in this bill are estimated to save American families close to $1,000 a year at the gas pump and will produce an estimated $22 billion in net annual savings for our nation’s consumers.
“By passing a bill which significantly lowers the emission of greenhouse gases, reduces our nation’s over reliant dependence on foreign energy resources, and invests in American-owned energy supplies, this New Direction Congress is continually moving our energy policies in a progressively positive direction that protects our pristine environment and safeguards the health of millions of Americans.”
