Clyburn Responds to President Bush's Economic Speech

WASHINGTON, D.C.House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement in response to President Bush’s speech in Fredericksburg, Virginia regarding the status of the U.S. economy and the federal budgetary process.

Today, the President tried to ‘spin’ his way to a strong economy.  The reality is that his misplaced priorities have created a struggling economy and are putting the squeeze on the pocketbooks of middle class families.

“The President and his roadblock Republicans have stopped legislation to protect 23 million American families from being hit by the unfair Alternative Minimum Tax, legislation that is paid-for and doesn’t shoulder future generations with debt.  They’ve also stopped a bill to provide 10 million children with health care coverage and blocked critical renewable energy legislation, among other things.

“Democrats will offer a budget this week that meets America’s priorities with increased investments in education, local law enforcement, healthcare, renewable energy, and the nation’s infrastructure.  But because the President and his roadblock Republicans refused to compromise, the legislation doesn’t go as far as we would like.  However, it is the right step toward moving the country in a New Direction.

“The time has come for this President to abandon his divisive rhetoric and work with this Congress in approving funding for programs that secure our homeland, invest in our children, aid our wounded veterans, and care for the sick and elderly.”
