WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement regarding passage of H.R. 6, the Energy Independence and Security Act. The legislation will be sent back to the Senate for final consideration.
“Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a landmark comprehensive and sustainable energy bill that will seek to protect our environment, create new American jobs, bolster our national security and steadily decrease our debilitating dependence on foreign energy resources.
“The Energy Independence and Security Act will aid those Americans immobilized by high gas prices by requiring automobile manufacturers to substantially increase the fuel efficiency standards of their vehicles. Furthermore, this legislation reaffirms this Congress’ commitment to moving our nation’s energy policies in a New Direction through the inclusion of environmentally friendly mandates which require that 15 percent of our electricity come from renewable sources.
“This New Direction Congress understands that the time has come for our energy policies to be more aligned with our technological capabilities and eco-conscience sentiments. By promoting the use of home-grown and American-owned energy resources, this bill strives to preserve our pristine environments, create new economies in rural communities and safeguard the health of millions of Americans.”
