WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today responded to a press conference held by President Bush.
“Rather than working with the Congress on resolving differences in spending priorities, the President chose to hold a press conference to criticize our efforts to compromise. His actions speak volumes.
“Congress is actively working in a bipartisan way to meet the needs of the American people and move the country in a New Direction. The House has passed a bill that provides our troops on the ground the resources they need. The Congress has also offered to meet the President half-way on our spending differences, but he refuses to respond. This week, Congress will move landmark energy independence legislation that will strengthen national security, protect our environment, grow our economy and create new jobs, reduce energy prices, and begin to address global warming. Also this week, House leaders will hold a summit to determine how we can address the growing uncertainty in the economy and protect middle class families struggling to make ends meet.
“I hope the President will join our bipartisan majorities to make these provisions law, and establish a New Direction for America—the American people want solutions, not a showdown.”
