WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip and former Member of the House Transportation Committee, James E. Clyburn, today released the following statement regarding the passage of the 2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Conference Report.

“With the passage of the 2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Conference Report, this New Direction Congress has reaffirmed its commitment to improving our country’s transport infrastructure and assisting those Americans suffering through our nation’s housing crisis.

“This vital legislation makes a $1 billion investment in improving our country’s aging bridges and sets aside $3.5 billion for improving safety and efficiency standards at our nation’s airports.  In addition, this bill allocates funds for foreclosure mitigation programs in states with high rates of defaults and foreclosures.

“With the recent collapse of the I-35 bridge in Minnesota and the dramatic downturn in our housing market, it is abundantly obvious that our nation’s travel and housing sectors are in need of assistance.  This bill provides such assistance by seeking to stabilize these sectors and safeguard the individuals that they serve.”
