Clyburn Responds to President Bush's Heritage Foundation Speech

WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement in response to President Bush’s speech at the Heritage Foundation in which he called Congressional Democrats efforts to adequately fund Department of Defense initiatives and veterans’ health programs “wasteful Washington spending.”

“Once again the President has decided to use his bully pulpit to misinform the American public on Democratic spending initiatives that aid our troops serving in harms way and provide upgraded medical services to injured veterans returning from combat.

“A President who sends our brave men and women into battle without first securing sufficient supplies of body armor or vehicles equipped to sustain IED attacks, has no standing to lecture Congress on what is best for our troops.  Furthermore, a President who refuses to nominate a Veterans Affairs Secretary in a timely manner has no footing to criticize Congressional Democrats for passing legislation that significantly increases funding for veterans health services.

“America’s troops serve our country with honor and distinction.  The President disgraces their service by not adequately rewarding them for their heroic acts and brave deeds.  I urge this Administration to change course and join Congressional Democrats in supporting measures that properly acknowledge and compensate our veterans for the many sacrifices they make defending our freedoms.”
