WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement in response to President Bush’s nomination of Edward Schafer to become the next Agriculture Secretary.
“I implore the President and his new Secretary of Agriculture nominee, Edward Schafer, to seize the moment and use this confirmation process as a catalyst to working with Congress to pass an effective and sustainable Farm Bill.
“For months, we have been stymied in our efforts to provide much needed federal aid to our nation’s struggling farmers. Farmers are the centerpiece of some of our society’s most important advancements and deserve to be helped in their time of need.
“It is my hope that former Governor Schafer will use his post as a platform to advocate on behalf of America’s farmers and address other important issues such as food safety and nutrition.”
