WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement in response to President Bush’s press conference with House Republican leadership in which he inferred that Congress is not getting its work done.
“I am continually surprised by the audacity of this President to accuse Congress of not getting its work done. Since regaining our majorities in the House and Senate, Democrats have pushed our country in a New Direction leading to landmark bipartisan legislation that makes investments in college aid programs, our national security infrastructure and a living wage for working Americans, to name a few.
“What’s even more distasteful and inaccurate is this President’s insistence that Congress’ efforts on SCHIP are ‘wasteful.’ There is nothing wasteful about passing a fiscally responsible bill that provides health care coverage to 10 million needy children. The only thing that has been wasteful about the current SCHIP impasse is the President’s refusal to work with the bipartisan majorities in Congress to help hard-working American families provide vital health care services for their dependent children.
“Today’s meeting should have been a bipartisan-bicameral discussion about how we provide health care to 10 million children and work through our budget differences. Republicans demonstrated that they prefer showdowns to solutions.”
