WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement on the revised State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization legislation, scheduled to be on the House floor tomorrow.
“I spent this past weekend at several events around the country and everywhere I went, people asked me if we would send this bill back to the President. After consulting with our Republican colleagues in the House and Senate, and addressing the concerns they raised, we are poised to pass this bill through the Congress and send it to the President’s desk once again. We hope he will sign the bill this time so we may provide critical health insurance coverage to 10 million American children.
“I want to clarify, that this children’s healthcare program was never intended to replace Medicaid. It is intended to cover the children of parents who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid and earn too little to purchase private health insurance. For the President to continue to misrepresent this fact shows a lack of sensitivity for working Americans who often take on two jobs to simply feed and clothe their children. It is these families who need relief, and I hope the President will join us in taking care of ‘the least of these.’”
