WASHINGTON, DC— House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn released the following statement today in response to retired Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez’s remarks that called the Bush Administration’s handling of the war incompetent and warned that the United States was “living a nightmare with no end in sight.” Retired Lt. General Sanchez is a former top commander of U.S. Armed Forces in Iraq.
“Once again another former high-ranking General has condemned the Bush Administration for its mismanagement of the Iraq War. The list of credible opponents to President Bush’s poorly administered Iraq policies continues to grow as sectarian violence and political stalemates thwart the country’s prospects for progress.
“Retired Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez recently characterized President Bush’s current surge strategy as a desperate move that will not achieve long-term stability. From the beginning, the President has repeatedly maintained that he follows the advice given to him by our military commanders on the ground in Iraq. I hope he will heed the sound advice from General Sanchez.
“The time has come for the President to join with Congressional Democrats in establishing a New Direction in Iraq which redeploys the US military, reestablishes their mission in the region and puts the Iraqi government in control of its future.”
