Washington, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn released the following statement today in response to a U.S. Department of Labor report that shows the loss of 4,000 jobs in August.
“Our country’s unemployment numbers are appalling. Now is the time for President Bush and congressional Republicans to work with Democrats in a bipartisan fashion in seeking a New Direction for our economy. Democrats delivered for working families victimized by our under-performing economy by passing the first increase in the federal minimum wage in ten years and spearheading legislation that serves as the single largest investment in higher education since the GI bill.
“With unemployment numbers rising, health care costs soaring, and home foreclosures occurring at alarming rates, the evidence is clear and convincing that the President’s economic policy has failed the American people. The Republicans continue to advance a myopic economic policy of more tax incentives for the rich while the average American struggles to pay their mortgage and send their children to college. Democrats plan to work toward a New Direction for our economy by building upon our policies for working families and addressing the housing crisis, providing health coverage for America’s children and establishing our energy independence.” |
