WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today commented on the passing of former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson.
“Although she was a reluctant political spouse, Lady Bird Johnson left a positive mark on this nation, quite literally. Her environmental advocacy brought us the highway beautification program and preservation of native habitats and species. She brought with her a touch of southern hospitality to the U.S. Congress, to the White House and across the world as an ambassador of goodwill. And she played a pivotal role in President Johnson’s ‘Great Society’ program helping to launch the Head Start program, advance a civil rights agenda, combat poverty and improve access to education and healthcare. Her grace, tenacity and altruism will be missed.”
