WASHINGTON, DC—House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today commented on the Senate’s failure to invoke cloture and move forward with debate on comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
“In the first weeks of the new Congress, a bipartisan group of House and Senate leaders met at the White House to discuss a variety of issues that lay ahead of us. The Democratic leadership agreed to work with the President on his bipartisan initiative for comprehensive immigration reform. Over the last few months we have sustained that pledge, but unfortunately the President was unable to be the leader that his party needed to maintain his commitment.
“Democrats value the rich contributions of immigrants and recognize that our immigration system is broken. I’m disappointed that the President and his Republican colleagues in the Senate blocked our opportunity to address the issue in a comprehensive way that restores the rule of law, strengthens border security, reunites families, creates tough and smart workplace enforcement, and brings 12 million people out of the shadows of our society.
